Alleged Fraud: Ex-NHIS Chief to Stay in Custody Ahead of Bail Hearing
The former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Yusuf, pleaded not guilty to corruption charges when they were read to him in court. His counsel, O.I. Habeeb, requested that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) while awaiting the hearing of his bail application.
However, the trial judge, Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu, clarified that once the defendant was arraigned, he was no longer under the EFCC’s custody. As a result, the judge ordered Yusuf to be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, pending the bail hearing. The case was adjourned to February 12, 2025.
