APC Chieftain Defends Obasa’s Impeachment: ‘It Was for Lagos’ Good
Fouad Oki, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was necessary for the greater good of the state.
Oki appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, shortly after the impeachment of Obasa, and emphasized that the Speaker’s removal was in the best interests of Lagos State. According to him, Obasa’s alleged misconduct, including accusations of fraud, had been a long-standing issue that needed to be addressed to maintain the integrity of the state’s legislature.
“Obasa’s impeachment was long overdue,” Oki remarked. “It was a move to safeguard the sanctity of the House of Assembly and to protect the interests of Lagos State.”
He further explained that President Bola Tinubu had been involved in efforts to resolve the crisis in the Lagos State legislature. Oki clarified that before President Tinubu returned to the state, the issue had been ongoing, prompting the intervention of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). The council, according to Oki, raised concerns about Obasa’s leadership and brought the matter to the president’s attention.
“The president, as a father and leader, called a meeting to address the issues raised by the elders of the party,” Oki revealed. “Unfortunately, when the president witnessed Obasa’s behavior firsthand, it became clear that the Speaker was recalcitrant, and that was when things broke down.”
Oki’s comments underline the significance of Obasa’s impeachment, not just as a political event, but as a necessary step to restore order and integrity within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
