APC chieftain Jesutega Onokpasa is dead
Nigeria’s political and media space was thrown into mourning on Tuesday following the sudden death of Jesutega Onokpasa, a well-known chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a fierce political commentator.
Onokpasa passed away on Monday, though details surrounding the circumstances of his death have not yet been made public.
The news of his passing was confirmed by APC supporter Okezie Atani, who posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle:
“We lost Barr. Jesutega Onokpasa, may his soul rest in perfect peace.”
A tribute also came from the Renewed Hope United Kingdom Facebook page, which described his passing as a “profound loss to the Nigerian political and legal landscape.”
“As a dedicated lawyer and political commentator, he was deeply engaged in shaping discourse and advocating for his beliefs,” the tribute read.
A trained lawyer and public affairs analyst, Onokpasa was a staunch supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and played an active role as a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in the run-up to the 2023 general elections. He served notably on the Publicity Committee, becoming a regular face on television, where his sharp analyses and loyalty to the party earned him national attention.
Known for his unflinching defense of the APC and bold media presence, Onokpasa was a vocal and controversial figure in political commentary.
His death leaves a gap in Nigeria’s evolving political conversation, especially among staunch defenders of the ruling party.
Condolences have continued to pour in from political allies, supporters, and observers across various platforms, with many remembering his passion, eloquence, and conviction.
May his soul rest in peace.
