Ambassador Nurain Abayomi Mumuni, a key figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has voiced concerns over the proposal to create 31 new states in Nigeria, warning that it could worsen the country’s economic challenges. Mumuni, in a statement released by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, urged lawmakers to reconsider the proposal in light of Nigeria’s ongoing economic difficulties, including rising unemployment, inflation, and infrastructure deficits.
Mumuni highlighted that many states are already struggling to meet their financial obligations and provide essential services to citizens. He expressed worry that the creation of additional states would further strain Nigeria’s limited resources and divert attention from urgent development needs.
Instead of focusing on expanding the number of states, Mumuni called for greater efforts to strengthen existing states and address core economic issues. He urged legislators to prioritize initiatives that foster unity, peace, and effective governance while ensuring that decisions made reflect practical solutions for the well-being of the population.
The proposed creation of 31 new states, currently under consideration by the House of Representatives, has stirred debate, with critics like Mumuni arguing that it would only deepen Nigeria’s financial and bureaucratic challenges.
