APC Defends Suspension of Edo Council Chairmen, Slams PDP for ‘False’ Allegations
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has strongly defended the recent suspension of 18 Local Government chairmen and their deputies by the State House of Assembly, stating that the decision was necessary to maintain order and stability in the state.
In a statement released on Friday in Benin City, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, the Acting State Chairman of the APC, addressed the accusations made by the PDP Caretaker Committee chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi. Tenebe described Aziegbemi’s press briefing, which criticized the suspension as an “extermination of constitutional democracy” and a sign of “lawlessness,” as baseless and defamatory.
The APC leadership in Edo expressed full support for the actions of the House of Assembly and the Councillors, who took steps to impeach the suspended chairmen for the good of the people. Tenebe also called on anti-graft agencies to investigate the alleged mismanagement and theft of public funds by the suspended council chairmen.
According to Tenebe, the suspension was in line with the state’s legal framework and aimed at ensuring that governance across all levels of government operated within the law. He highlighted that Governor Monday Okpebholo, as the leader of the state, has the responsibility to protect the interests of the citizens and maintain public order.
Tenebe further criticized the PDP Caretaker Committee’s allegations, stating that they were a desperate attempt to discredit the state government rather than a genuine concern for the well-being of Edo citizens. He argued that the PDP’s narrative should not be taken seriously, emphasizing that the people of Edo are well aware of the party’s tactics and are not swayed by their claims.
The APC also reminded the public of the financial mismanagement that occurred under the previous PDP-led government, referencing the alleged “biggest financial heist in history” during the tenure of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. Additionally, the APC pointed out that under the PDP, local government chairmen were removed and suspended, and opposition members were subjected to abuse, including the demolition of their properties despite valid court orders.
“The PDP’s reign in Edo State was a dark chapter, where citizens’ rights were blatantly abused,” Tenebe said, comparing it to the days of colonial oppression. Despite this, Tenebe affirmed that the APC would not allow the PDP to twist facts or wrongly accuse Governor Okpebholo.
He concluded by calling for a collaborative effort between opposition parties, civil society organizations, and the state government to address any grievances and uphold the democratic process. Tenebe emphasized that Governor Okpebholo has a clear mandate, and no amount of distraction or blackmail would deter him from fulfilling his duties.
