“APC Local Government Chairmen Issue 72-Hour Ultimatum to Workers”
The local government chairmen reinstated by the Appeal Court under the All Progressives Congress (APC) have issued a stern 72-hour ultimatum for local government workers to resume their duties. This move follows their takeover of various local government council secretariats across the state on Monday.
The newly elected chairmen and councilors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did not report to their assigned offices at the council secretariats, despite an order from Governor Ademola Adeleke. Meanwhile, the APC chairmen, now in charge, took control of the council offices and firmly instructed the workers to return to their posts within 72 hours or face unspecified consequences.
This latest development comes after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) advised local government employees in Osun State to stay away from the secretariats for their safety, in light of the ongoing political tensions.
To ensure the safety of both citizens and government assets, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, responded to a request from the Osun State Police Command, deploying additional police forces across the state. Officers were stationed at the local government secretariats and key strategic locations to maintain order and prevent any escalation of violence.
Jamiu Olawumi, former Special Adviser on Education under Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, confirmed that all APC chairmen and councilors were able to resume their duties without incident in all 30 local government areas. He revealed that many of the chairmen had issued press releases demanding workers return by Wednesday at the latest. After this deadline, the employment status of those who fail to comply will be determined. The 72-hour ultimatum remains firm.
As tensions continue to simmer, all eyes are now on the response from local government workers and the potential for further confrontations between the APC and PDP factions.
