Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is on track to secure all six South South states in the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio also described the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the Governor of Edo State in the September 21 off-season election as divinely ordained, believing it would bring much-needed respite to the people of the state.
Speaking at the weekend during a visit by Governor Okpebholo to his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio explained that his defection to the APC was a strategic decision aimed at ensuring that the South South region had a strong voice at the national level and in the country’s political decisions.
“Under the APC administration, many of us decided there was need for us to change the political basket to enable us to represent our people at the national level and also have a say in what was going on in the country,” Akpabio stated. “When I made that strong movement to the APC, it was to move our people in the South South region to the centre.”
The Senate president noted that, based on current political trends and available data, the APC is poised to bring more states in the South South into its fold, shifting the political dynamics in the region.
Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, expressed optimism that the party’s expected victory in the region would significantly boost the developmental trajectory of the South South.
In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to Akpabio for his guidance and leadership, stating that he was in Akwa Ibom to learn from his predecessor’s wealth of experience. “Seeing the development in Akwa Ibom, I have come to learn from my leader, seek his advice, and draw from his wealth of experience. He has graciously advised me,” Okpebholo said.
