Ayo Arise Backs Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, Says Nigeria Cannot Survive Without Taxation
Former Ekiti North Senator, Ayo Arise, has expressed strong support for the tax reform bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu, asserting that Nigeria cannot thrive without implementing some form of taxation. Arise emphasized that taxation is crucial for generating revenue, especially in the face of the country’s financial challenges.
“No nation can survive without one form of taxation or the other. Otherwise, there is no way the country can generate more income,” Arise said. He added that with the ongoing discussions around subsidy removal, it is clear that Nigeria can no longer depend solely on a single source of revenue.
The former senator praised the administration’s efforts to boost revenue generation, highlighting the President’s push for a broader economic base. “The President wants to see the country generate more revenue. If you look at the excise levies, Nigerians are now exporting more than under any previous government. These are part of the achievements of this government,” he noted.
Arise further pointed out the growing export activities in Nigeria, stating that the nation is witnessing increased export of items such as textiles, cashews, and even cultural products like clothing. He mentioned his conversation with the Comptroller-General of Customs, who revealed a shift from the past, where ships returned with little cargo, to a time when export activities are thriving.
“Things are improving in terms of activities at the Customs because we are expecting more,” Arise concluded, signaling optimism about Nigeria’s economic prospects under the current administration.
