Benue Police Arrest 42 Armed Herdsmen and Bandits in Renewed Security Crackdown
The Benue State Police Command has arrested at least 42 armed herdsmen and local bandits across multiple communities in a renewed effort to tackle criminal activities in the state.
Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Emenari made the announcement in Makurdi, revealing that most suspects apprehended in the past month have been charged to court, with about 20 herders currently remanded and awaiting trial, while others remain under investigation.
Police tactical units have been actively deployed to forests and rural areas known for violent attacks, including Apa, Gwer West, Logo, Katsina-Ala, Ukum, Agatu, and Guma Local Government Areas.
“We are committed to making these communities safe so residents can return to their homes and farming activities,” Emenari said. “In the last month, we arrested 42 armed herdsmen and bandits. Most have been charged, and about 10 have been remanded by the courts. The rest will face prosecution once investigations conclude.”
The police recovered two AK-47 rifles and 21 locally fabricated guns during the operations.
Emenari also highlighted intensified efforts against cult-related violence, noting that no cult attacks have been recorded since he assumed office a month ago.
He called on residents to cooperate with the police by providing timely information and praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for his steadfast support of the police command’s mission to restore peace and security in Benue State.
