Boko Haram Attacks Don’t Stop — Maiduguri Calls for Military Base Move

The residents of Bale Galtimari, a densely populated neighborhood in Maiduguri, Borno State, have issued a heartfelt plea for the immediate relocation of Giwa Barracks, citing ongoing fears of insurgent attacks and growing insecurity.

During a press conference held by the Bale Galtimari Consultative Forum on Sunday, community leaders voiced alarm over the military facility’s continued presence in the area. The forum’s chairman, Zanna Boguma, highlighted the danger of housing such a strategic military installation in the heart of civilian communities like Galtimari, Fori, and 122 – areas home to over a million people.

“We recognize and deeply respect the role of the military in protecting our state,” Boguma stated, “but placing such a high-risk installation in a civilian zone exposes innocent lives to grave danger.”

According to Boguma, Giwa Barracks – originally established as a detention center for suspected insurgents – has been a target of repeated Boko Haram attacks. The facility was assaulted once in 2014, three times in 2015, and again in 2019, all in attempts to free detainees.

Most recently, an explosion at the barracks’ armoury sparked widespread panic throughout surrounding neighborhoods. The incident served as a chilling reminder of the risk the community lives with daily.

Boguma also noted that the House of Representatives had previously supported a motion by Rep. Satomi Ahmad (Jere Federal Constituency) calling for the barracks’ relocation, signaling broad political backing for the move.

“This appeal transcends politics,” Boguma emphasized. “It’s about protecting lives and ensuring both civilians and military personnel can operate in safer environments.”

While expressing gratitude to the Nigerian Armed Forces for their relentless counter-insurgency efforts, the forum also praised Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for his commitment to peace and security.

Boguma concluded by reaffirming the community’s resolve to continue advocating – peacefully and persistently – until meaningful action is taken.
