Borno State’s 2025 Budget Includes N1 Billion for Generator Fuel, While Poverty and Insecurity Persist
A review of Borno State’s 2025 budget by the press has revealed that the state government has allocated a staggering N1 billion for generator fuel in the upcoming fiscal year. This allocation equates to roughly N83.3 million per month or N2.7 million daily, based on a 30-day month. With fuel prices assumed to be N1,000 per litre, the state government plans to consume approximately 2,777 litres of fuel each day for the Government House.
In addition to the fuel allocation, Borno’s government budget includes N2 billion for the purchase of “Power Generating Sets” for the Government House. The state’s 2025 budget also sets aside N800 million for fueling motor vehicles, as well as N400 million for refreshments and meals for government officials. Another N500 million is earmarked for honorariums and sitting allowances.
Further breakdowns of the budget show that the Government House has allocated N400 million for motor vehicles, while N400 million is slated for office furniture and fittings. Additionally, N50 million has been designated for canteen and kitchen equipment.
The Office of the Secretary to the State Government has also planned N1 billion for office furniture and fittings in 2025. While these significant expenditures have been made for government operations, the state continues to struggle with widespread poverty, affecting over 900,000 residents.
In Borno, 48% of school-age children do not have access to education, while 47% lack proper sanitation facilities. The state also continues to grapple with severe insecurity, which has led to the loss of lives and property. Despite these challenges, Governor Babagana Zulum has raised concerns about declining revenue, and the substantial budget for government operations has drawn scrutiny from residents and critics alike.
