China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi Arrives in Nigeria to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

China’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Wang Yi, arrived in Nigeria on January 8, 2025, as part of a diplomatic mission aimed at reinforcing the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The visit will focus on enhancing cooperation in key sectors such as trade, investment, health, technology, and infrastructure development.

In his opening address, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, pledged the country’s dedication to building a more resilient relationship with China. He highlighted the significance of President Bola Tinubu’s visit to China in September 2024, where both nations signed four important Memoranda of Understanding. Onyeama reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to implementing these agreements at various levels.

Wang Yi, in his remarks, emphasized that his visit marks the continuation of deliberations held at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, further solidifying China’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Nigeria.

Arriving in Nigeria at approximately 7:15 pm local time on January 8, Wang Yi was warmly welcomed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, along with other senior government officials, including Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Yu Dunhai.

During his stay, Wang Yi is scheduled to engage in high-level discussions with Nigerian officials, addressing pressing global issues, regional security concerns, and economic development opportunities. This visit reflects China’s ongoing dedication to enhancing its partnership with Nigeria, fostering growth, and contributing to peace and stability in the region.
