CNG Vows to Fight Against Controversial Tax Reform Bills in National Assembly

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has pledged to continue its campaign against the federal government’s tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, demanding that the government address several ambiguities within the proposed legislation.

Speaking in Damaturu during a town hall meeting with student leaders, civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders, CNG’s National Coordinator, Aliyu Charanchi, raised serious concerns about the impact of the tax reform bill on Nigerians. The meeting, themed “Tax Reform Bill: A Catalyst for Economic Growth or a Burden on the People?”, highlighted the group’s position that the bill lacks clear definitions and may worsen the economic situation for ordinary Nigerians.

Charanchi questioned the motivations behind the bill, asking, “What are the problems the Nigerian government is trying to solve, and why are the only solutions being presented through this tax reform bill? Will this bill truly alleviate the suffering Nigerians are enduring today?”

The CNG leader reiterated the coalition’s call for the suspension of the bill, emphasizing the need for a broader consultation with the Nigerian people. He also warned members of the National Assembly that they risk losing public support in the 2027 elections if they fail to reconsider the bill or withdraw it entirely.

“We Nigerians gave them the opportunity to be where they are today,” Charanchi said. “If they don’t act within the law to suspend or withdraw this tax reform bill, Nigerians will not hesitate to remove them in 2027.”

CNG remains committed to its campaign against the bill, insisting that the proposed reforms must be revised and fully understood by the people before they are enacted.
