CUPP Condemns APC’s Threats Against Peter Obi, Warns Democracy is in Danger

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has raised alarms about the state of democracy in Nigeria following the recent attack on the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The coalition accused the APC of attempting to silence opposition figures and warned that such actions threaten the country’s democratic principles.

The controversy started with a statement by Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, who accused Obi of “crossing the line” and warned him of the potential consequences of his actions. This remark followed Obi’s New Year message to Nigerians, which the APC spokesperson took issue with.

Obi’s supporters, particularly the Obidient Movement, have expressed their concerns over Morka’s comment, describing it as a reckless attack on Obi. The LP chieftain also alleged threats to his life after delivering his message to the nation.

In response, CUPP, through its National Secretary, High Chief Peter Ameh, issued a statement condemning Morka’s words. The coalition emphasized that such threats and attempts to intimidate opposition figures have no place in a democratic society.

“Peter Obi, as a prominent opposition leader, has every right to express his views without fear of retribution,” the statement read. It also emphasized that Obi’s New Year message was a legitimate exercise of his freedom of speech, aimed at addressing Nigeria’s challenges and the growing authoritarian tendencies in the country.

CUPP further condemned Morka’s suggestion that certain criticisms or topics should be off-limits for discussion. The coalition warned that this kind of rhetoric could set a dangerous precedent that undermines free speech and accountability in governance.

The statement also pointed out that such threats against Obi are reminiscent of practices in authoritarian regimes, where dissent is silenced through intimidation. It called on Nigerians to stand in solidarity with Obi and defend the rights of opposition figures to express their opinions without fear of consequences.

CUPP concluded by noting the irony of the situation, suggesting that if the APC had faced similar threats while it was in opposition, the party might never have gained power. The coalition called for unity in rejecting any actions that seek to suppress dissent and weaken the nation’s democratic structures.
