Damaturu Consumers Decry YEDC’s Confusing Electricity Distribution, Demand Fair Allocation
Electricity consumers along Gashua Road in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, have voiced their dissatisfaction with the current electricity distribution system implemented by Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC). The residents, represented by Musa Ali Maigari, the Public Relations Officer for Gashua Road Youth Awareness, have raised concerns about the recent announcement on the YEDC portal regarding the distribution schedule, which they claim has caused significant confusion.
“The information on the portal is inadequate as it only mentions Band A without explaining how Bands B and C operate,” Maigari stated. “This lack of clarity has left us uncertain about our electricity allocation and the expected hours of supply, making it difficult to plan our daily activities effectively.”
Maigari emphasized that community leaders and residents viewed the current situation as unfair and disrespectful, calling for better communication and engagement with the community before implementing changes. He highlighted the importance of informing and consulting residents about such decisions to avoid confusion and frustration.
The community is demanding a more equitable and strategic distribution system, with a request for at least 4 hours of electricity in the morning, 4 hours in the afternoon, and 4 hours at night. They expressed that the current schedule is negatively impacting both their businesses and household activities.
“We have given YEDC Damaturu management 48 hours to respond to our concerns. Should we not receive a satisfactory response within this period, we are prepared to escalate our complaint to the YEDC main branch in Yola,” Maigari concluded, as the community waits for an official response.
