Day Two of FEC Sessions: Tinubu Focuses on Urgent National Memos

Less than 24 hours after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, President Bola Tinubu is once again presiding over another council meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This marks the second session of a two-day marathon, which began at 01:26 p.m. on Tuesday when President Tinubu arrived at the Council Chamber.

Earlier, during Monday’s FEC meeting, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, had announced that due to a significant backlog of memos, the meeting would spill into the next day. He explained that since there had been no FEC sessions since December, a substantial number of memos had accumulated, prompting the President’s decision to address them promptly. Idris also noted that a press briefing would follow Tuesday’s meeting.

Present at the second-day meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, Chief of Staff Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Head of the Civil Service Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, and several ministers and ministers of state.

One of the key presentations during the meeting came from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), along with various ministries, departments, and agencies presenting memos for review.

On Monday, the FEC approved a significant N4.8 billion allocation for the Presidential Treatment Programme, which will fund 150,000 HIV treatment packs to be distributed from February to May 2025. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, explained that this decision was part of the ongoing discussions concerning the effects of recent U.S. policy changes on Nigeria’s health programs, especially those focused on HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria funding.
