Dele Farotimi Defies Defamation Charges, Declares He Is Unbreakable
Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights advocate, has expressed unwavering determination in the face of his ongoing trial for alleged defamation. Despite facing serious charges, he remains resolute and undeterred.
On December 24, Farotimi was granted release from the correctional facility in Ekiti state after fulfilling his bail requirements. The activist was brought before the court on 14 counts of alleged defamation, which he has pleaded not guilty to.
The charges stem from accusations that Farotimi “criminally defamed” Afe Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in his book titled Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.
In a mysterious and defiant post shared on his X page on Thursday, Farotimi declared that he would not be intimidated. “Tomorrow will be ‘when we kill him.’ They then use rumours to ruin him,” he wrote cryptically. He continued, saying, “A god that the god of thunder cannot kill—Is the power of the god of thunder not enough to destroy? I face no fears. I have none.”
Currently, Farotimi is contending with legal battles in two courts, both stemming from accusations of defamation against Babalola. Earlier in the month, on December 9, a federal high court in Ekiti granted Farotimi bail set at N50 million, with one surety, following charges of cybercrime filed by the Inspector-General of Police. Despite the legal challenges, Farotimi’s resolve to stand firm remains unshaken.
