Dele Momodu Criticizes PDP’s Readiness for 2027 Elections, Blames APC for Party’s Woes
deleDele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has traced the party’s ongoing internal crisis to unresolved issues from the 2022 presidential primaries and alleged interference by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, Momodu, who was also a presidential aspirant within the PDP, pointed to the party’s struggles as originating from the aftermath of the primaries.
Momodu explained that the rift began when former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, lost the party’s presidential ticket to Atiku Abubakar and was subsequently overlooked for the vice-presidential slot. “The crisis started from when the then-Governor Wike lost to Atiku Abubakar in the primary and the bid for the running mate,” Momodu stated.
He further suggested that while Wike may not have officially joined the APC, his actions indicate a shift toward the ruling party. “He is within the APC today. However, he is yet to find the courage to physically join APC because he knows he would not be able to wield the kind of power he wielded in PDP,” Momodu remarked, hinting that Wike’s influence in PDP continues to cause tension within the party.
Momodu: APC Orchestrating Crises to Weaken Opposition Parties, Push Nigeria Toward One-Party State
In his analysis, Momodu accused the APC of strategically stirring up crises within opposition parties like PDP, the Labour Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to consolidate power and push Nigeria toward a one-party state. “Nigeria is obviously moving in the direction of a one-party state. The ruling party, APC, is so scared of opposition that right now crises are being orchestrated from party to party,” he said.
Momodu rejected claims that the PDP’s issues were the result of internal incompetence, lack of direction, or unity. Instead, he blamed the ruling APC, asserting that the party’s dominance and influence were largely responsible for the opposition’s turmoil.
“No, if you have a government that is wielding all its state power against the opposition, what will you do?” he questioned. “Wike would not be that powerful if he did not have the backing of the ruling government. Even Tinubu knows that.”

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Momodu expressed doubt about the PDP’s readiness to mount a successful challenge. He specifically criticized the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, stating, “I’m not worried about members that are adopted. That would be the decision of the members of the party, if the party survives till then. But from what I’m seeing right now, I don’t think they are ready, especially our NWC. They are not ready.”
Momodu also voiced concern that the party may decide not to field a presidential candidate in 2027, suggesting, “I won’t be surprised if they announce that they are not interested in contesting the presidency in 2027.” His comments reflect the ongoing frustration within the PDP and his doubts about the party’s capacity to regroup and challenge the APC in the future.
In sum, Dele Momodu’s comments shed light on the internal struggles of the PDP, external influences shaping the party’s fate, and his skepticism about the party’s future prospects under its current leadership.
