Members of staff at Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, are in mourning following the tragic death of one of their own, Mr. Olisaemeka Chukwuma. The 56-year-old, who worked in the Bursary Department, was killed in his home at St. Bridges area of Umueji, Asaba, over the weekend.
Chukwuma, who had returned to Asaba for his regular weekend visit, was reportedly attacked in his residence. The shocking news has sent waves of grief throughout the university community.
Mrs. Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa, the university’s Bursar, expressed her deep shock over the loss, describing Chukwuma as a “very good jolly fellow” who maintained a friendly and cordial relationship with everyone. “You will never hear him raise his voice against anyone. He was always smiling and happy,” she said, lamenting the unexpected nature of his death. She prayed for the strength and fortitude for his family to cope with the loss.
Mr. Moses Darah, a staff member of the university, also took to Facebook to express his grief, highlighting Chukwuma’s peaceful and jovial nature. “He was known for his peaceful and jovial nature,” Darah wrote. He also urged the police to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. “As I speak to you now, Asaba is no longer safe, we are confused over the situation,” he added, reflecting the growing concerns over safety in the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident and assured that the matter is being investigated. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward as investigations continue.
As the university community and local residents grapple with this tragic event, the call for justice and increased security in Asaba has intensified.
