Ebonyi Killings Highlight Escalating Violence, RULAAC Demands Swift Justice

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), a civil rights organization, has strongly condemned the government’s failure to address the growing threat posed by armed herdsmen, following the brutal killings of several Ebonyi State indigenes. In a statement issued on Wednesday, signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, RULAAC emphasized that it was time for decisive government action against herdsmen banditry.

The organization described the massacre as likely a revenge for the killing of cows, signaling a dangerous escalation of violence in local communities. RULAAC expressed deep concern over the massacre, especially given the ongoing peace efforts, as highlighted by the traditional ruler of Nkalaha.

“The failure of both federal and state governments to effectively address the menace posed by armed herdsmen is worryingly disappointing,” the statement read. The organization noted that this issue has persisted for too long, with reports of killings, rapes, and destruction of property, leading to a pervasive sense of fear and insecurity.

While commending the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Obila, for her swift response to the affected communities, RULAAC stressed that prayer and fasting could not replace the urgent need for government action. They called on the government to prioritize citizens’ safety by taking immediate steps to apprehend the perpetrators. “The call for security agencies to apprehend the murderers within 24 hours is a commendable step, and we hope it leads to tangible results,” the organization added.

RULAAC also highlighted the importance of supporting the victims’ families and ensuring justice and rehabilitation in the wake of such tragedies. The group further stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent future violence and protect citizens’ dignity, underscoring the importance of sustained dialogue and community engagement to resolve underlying issues.

As the community mourns the lives lost, RULAAC urged Nigerians to unite in demanding justice for the victims and advocating for a safer environment for all citizens.
