ECOWAS: Tinubu seeks regional integration
Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to integrate regionally.
He made the call during the commencement of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Second Ordinary Session in Abuja in 2023.
The Nigerian President, represented by Deputy Senate President, Jibirn Barau, stated that regional cooperation is critical for Africa.
He expressed hope that the session’s talks will reverberate throughout history and serve as an inspiration for future generations.
“As parliamentarians, it is crucial to remember that we represent the aspirations and hopes of the people of West Africa, especially those who have faced immense hardships and deprivations.
“Mr Speaker, you have demonstrated exceptional leadership, opening new avenues for cross-regional cooperation and integration.”
He added that the European Economic Community had achieved a common currency for its member countries, kept peace, and eliminated passport control within the Schengen area.
The session will also cover the Consolidated Community Budget for 2024 and the status of the ECOWAS Integration and Development Programme.
