Edo guber: Women, youths want suspension of Shaibu’s impeachment process

HUNDREDS of youths, women and men, yesterday, protested in Jattu, the home town of the Edo State Deputy Governor, Mr. Philip Shaibu, calling on the Edo State House of Assembly to stop the impeachment move against the embattled deputy governor, which began on Wednesday.

They said going ahead with the process would not be good for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as it prepares for the election.

The protesters moved around some major roads in Jattu and later terminated at the popular Utokwe Junction and called on the State and National Working Committee, NWC, of the PDP to wade into an impeachment move against Shaibu.
One of the leaders of the protest, Mellow Oshiomah, said they were worried over the prolonged feud between leaders of the party in Edo State and urged them to embrace peace in the interest of the PDP.

Other speakers including Mr. Aminu Umosor, Gafata Emmanuel and Haija Anetu Momodu, said they would mobilise the people of the state and the PDP to work against the party if they continue with the plan to impeach Shaibu as Edo deputy governor.

They said this was to show the Edo people that they stand by Philip Shaibu and the mandate they gave him, noting that, if Governor Godwin Obaseki and the House of Assembly were ready for dialogue and true reconciliation, they should come with clean hands and not impeachment notice.

The protesters, however, appealed to the lawmakers to stay clear of any move to impeach the deputy governor to give the state its desired peace.

We can’t stop legislators from working —PDP chairman

Contacted, Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, said while the party was looking for ways to amicably resolve the crisis, it would not stop the House of Assembly from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

He said: “Basically, the party would want everywhere to be peaceful, we will do all we need to do to make sure that everybody is on board but what we will do, we will normally not come to the public that we are doing this or that. We are trying to make sure that everything is resolved amicably but that should not preclude the House of Assembly from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.”

Meanwhile, Mr Musa Ebomhiana, press secretary to the deputy governor, disclosed yesterday that efforts were on to resolve the matter.
