Edo PDP Urges President Tinubu to Intervene After Alleged Impeachment of Oredo LG Chairman

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the growing political crisis in the state, following the controversial impeachment of the Oredo Local Government Chairman, Tom Obaseki.

Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the state caretaker committee chairman of the PDP, made the appeal during a press conference in Benin City on Friday. He condemned what he described as a blatant disregard for the rule of law by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, accusing them of orchestrating the impeachment through the actions of 12 imposters who posed as legitimate councilors.

Aziegbemi expressed concern over what he called a “coup d’état” carried out by the APC-led government against democracy in Edo State. He warned that if such actions were allowed to continue unchecked, it could lead to anarchy and the erosion of democratic principles.

He stated, “The Edo State government must be called to order to avoid a state of anarchy following the outright disregard for the rule of law. The latest impeachment was at the Oredo Local Government, where 12 imposters posing as councilors invaded the council and claimed to have impeached the council chairman, Tom Obaseki.”

In response to his impeachment, Tom Obaseki firmly rejected the allegations and stated that he remained the duly elected chairman of Oredo Local Government. He clarified that the video circulating online, purportedly showing his impeachment, was the result of a criminal act by hoodlums who unlawfully invaded the council’s legislative arm, which was currently in recess.

Obaseki stressed that these individuals were not legitimate councilors, but instead were imposters. He urged the public to dismiss the video, calling the act an “unthinkable” example of impunity and criminality.

He added, “If this level of impunity is allowed to stand, then tomorrow, anyone could wake up, invade a government house, and declare themselves governor or president. Such a scenario is unthinkable in a lawful society. We are not in a banana republic where anarchy reigns.”

The situation remains tense as the PDP calls for urgent presidential intervention to restore order and uphold the rule of law in Edo State.
