Ekiti, Osun, and Ondo States Spend N1.6 Billion on Honorarium Amid Financial Struggles
A review of the budget performance documents for the South-West states in 2024 has revealed that between January and September, three states spent a total of N1.6 billion on honorarium and sitting allowances. The states involved in the review include Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo.
Ekiti State allocated N766.3 million for honorarium during the nine-month period, while Osun State spent N764.3 million on the same category. Ondo State spent N111.9 million on honorarium and sitting allowances, bringing the total expenditure for the three states to N1.642 billion.
In the 2025 budget, Osun State plans to allocate N1.6 billion for honorarium and sitting allowances, along with a separate N2.5 billion for refreshment and meals. Ondo State’s budget includes N70 million for refreshment and meals in 2025, in addition to N200 million earmarked for international travels related to training and other activities.
This spending occurs amidst concerns over the revenue shortages faced by state governments. The states have repeatedly highlighted their reliance on federally distributed allocations and loans to meet fiscal demands, often exacerbated by heavy debt servicing that further strains their budgets.
The significant focus on sitting allowances, refreshment, and travel comes at a time when states continue to face challenges in providing essential services such as healthcare, education, clean water, and infrastructure. Additionally, there are growing concerns regarding accountability and the management of public resources, as states struggle to meet the basic needs of their populations.
