Emir of Kano Calls for Peace After Deadly Land Dispute in Rimin Zakara
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has appealed for peace and patience among residents of Rimin Zakara following a violent land dispute with Bayero University, Kano (BUK), which tragically resulted in the loss of lives. The Emir made these remarks during a visit to the area after returning from pilgrimage, expressing condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the clash and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
Sanusi emphasized the importance of prayer for the deceased and strength for their families, hoping that such a tragedy would not be repeated in the community. He urged the residents to exercise restraint and respect the legal processes that are in place to resolve the matter, warning that resorting to violence only leads to further suffering.
“When violence erupts, it is our own people who suffer. No amount of destruction or bloodshed will resolve the issue. We must work together to protect lives and property,” he stated.
The Emir acknowledged that the land dispute, which has lingered for years, is complex, with both the community and BUK claiming legal ownership of the land. He called for an evidence-based resolution through the court system, coupled with constructive dialogue with all involved parties.
“This matter should not be complicated. If the case is in court, it must be resolved with clear evidence. We must sit down with all concerned parties to find a lasting solution to the problem,” he said.
As part of his efforts to mediate, Emir Sanusi announced plans to form a committee that would include representatives from all stakeholders, such as the state government, BUK, security agencies, and community leaders. He emphasized that the committee would work closely with the state governor, BUK authorities, and security officials to ensure that justice is served.
However, he also reminded the residents that those who had sold their land and received compensation must accept the reality of the situation.
In his call for peace, the Emir reinforced the idea that no land or property is worth the loss of human life, stressing that the life of one person is more valuable than all the land in the world.
“The life of one individual is more valuable than the entire world. We must work together to ensure such tragedies never happen again. Justice will prevail, and Allah is always with those who stand for the truth,” he said.
The deadly clash occurred during a demolition of illegally constructed buildings on the disputed land on Sunday. A combined security team allegedly opened fire, killing four individuals and injuring several others. In response, the State Government, through the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Wayya, announced the formation of a committee to investigate the killings.
