Ex-minster Adebayo Shittu says #EndBadGovernance treason, punishable by death

Nigeria’s former communications minister, Adebayo Shittu, says the#EndBadGovernance protest planned for August 1 to 10 is a treasonous act punishable by death because it is aimed at regime change.

“You want to protest, want to end bad governance. That mischievously implies that you want to remove the government, which in itself is a treasonable act,” Mr Shittu said in an interview with News Central on Monday.

When anchors of the interview cautioned Mr Shittu against labelling a protest treason as improper, the former minister doubled down on his statement.

“Your restricting interpretation should not be imposed on all Nigerians, Mr Shittu told his interviewers.

As food prices soar and the cost of living crisis deepens under Mr Tinubu’s government, Nigerians are organising nationwide protests tagged EndBadGovernance in response to the escalating economic hardship.

On Monday, protesters in Suleja hit the streets in demonstrations over economic hardships under Mr Tinubu’s watch.
