An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has ordered the remand of Moyosore Johnson, a 55-year-old man accused of causing the death of a woman through a botched surgery. Johnson, who has been charged with conspiracy and causing the unlawful death of 26-year-old Badirat Adebayo, was brought before the court on Wednesday. However, Magistrate Kausarat Ayofe did not take his plea, citing a lack of jurisdiction over the case.
The defendant, whose address remains undisclosed, was remanded in a correctional centre pending further proceedings. Magistrate Ayofe directed the police to submit the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice, with the case set for mention on March 27.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Segun Adegboye, the incident occurred on July 5, 2024, at Apata Igbala Hospital in Iseyin, Oyo State. It is alleged that Johnson, who is not a qualified doctor, performed surgery on Adebayo, during which he unlawfully removed her womb, ultimately leading to her death.
The charges against Johnson contravene Sections 516 and 319 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000, which address conspiracy and causing death through unlawful actions. The case has raised concerns about the dangers posed by unqualified individuals operating in the medical field.
