Falana Demands Release Of Police Officer Makinde, Detained Without Charges & Found In Leg Chains Since Nov. 11
Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and prominent human rights activist, has called for the immediate release of ASP Makinde Vincent, a serving police officer who has been detained at Asokoro Police Station in Abuja since November 11, 2024.
In a statement released on December 16, 2024, Falana revealed that he had received a disturbing picture from a fellow police officer, showing ASP Makinde Vincent with his legs chained while in police custody. The officer has been detained for over a month without any disclosure of the alleged offense.
Falana strongly condemned the inhumane treatment of the detained officer and demanded an investigation into the matter. “I call on the Police Authorities to release ASP Makinde Vincent and investigate his dehumanization in police custody,” Falana stated.
The human rights advocate emphasized that the use of leg chains on a detainee is a clear violation of their fundamental human rights and a form of torture. He urged the Nigerian Police Force to uphold the principles of the rule of law and respect for human dignity, regardless of the alleged crime.
