Federal Fire Service Reports N67.1bn Loss in 2024 as Fires Claim 100 Lives
Abdulganiyu Jaji, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), revealed that fire outbreaks in Nigeria caused a staggering property loss of approximately N67.1 billion in 2024. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Jaji also reported that over 100 lives were tragically lost to fire-related incidents during the same period.
Despite the substantial losses, the Federal Fire Service managed to save property valued at an impressive N1.94 trillion last year. Jaji highlighted that the service responded to thousands of emergencies, saving an estimated 30,890 lives in the process.
Looking ahead, Jaji warned that the harmattan season, with its dry and low-humidity conditions, could lead to an increase in fire outbreaks. He urged operators of fuel stations, gas refill stations, petrol tanker drivers, and the public to adhere to strict safety protocols to mitigate such risks.
The Federal Fire Service intends to enhance its response capabilities through cutting-edge technologies, such as the National Fire Detection and Alarm System (NAFDAS) and the N-Alert Fire Alarm App, to improve both awareness and response times.
Jaji also commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the acquisition of advanced firefighting equipment and the remodelling of the National Fire Academy. He appealed to Nigerians to support the repeal and re-enactment of the Fire Service Act of 1963, emphasizing that such a move would strengthen the Service and improve its effectiveness in tackling fire emergencies.
