Former Senator and Diplomat, Professor Jibril Aminu, Dies at 85
Nigeria has lost one of its distinguished statesmen, Professor Jibril Aminu, a former senator, diplomat, and renowned cardiologist. He passed away on Wednesday in Abuja at the age of 85, following a prolonged illness.
Professor Aminu was widely respected for his service to the nation in various capacities. From 1999 to 2003, he served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, helping to shape diplomatic relations during a critical post-military era.
In 2003, he transitioned to legislative service, representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate until 2011. His tenure in the Senate was marked by his deep intellect and commitment to national development.
Before his political career, Aminu had established himself as a leading medical professional. He earned his first medical degree from the University of Ibadan in 1965 and went on to complete a PhD in Medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London in 1972.
A revered academic, politician, and public servant, Professor Aminu is survived by his two wives and nine children. Tributes have begun pouring in to honor a man whose legacy spans medicine, diplomacy, and governance.
