Four Suspects Arrested for Allegedly Burning 74-Year-Old Woman to Death in Anambra
The Abagana Divisional Police Headquarters in Anambra has arrested four suspects in connection with the brutal killing of a 74-year-old woman, who was allegedly burned to death in the Ifitedunu area. Among those arrested is 21-year-old Chinyere Ekwenugo, who is accused of conspiring with others to murder the elderly woman, who was reportedly in a wheelchair at the time.
The other suspects in custody are Uzochukwu Okeke, 47, Fidel Anayo, 60, and Ikenna Anene, 54, all of whom are from Abagana. The shocking incident reportedly took place around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga revealed that during questioning, Ekwenugo confessed that her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe, who remains at large, along with three other accomplices, set the woman on fire. According to Ekwenugo’s statement, they had even brought a casket to bury the victim before the police intervened.
The police also recovered the charred remains of the woman, her wheelchair, and a casket from the scene. Efforts are underway to apprehend the main suspect, Igwe, who is still on the run.
The body of the deceased has been taken to the morgue for autopsy as the police continue to investigate the cause of death. Anambra’s Police Commissioner, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation. In the meantime, he has called for calm in the community.
