From Gboko to Glory: Ordega Bags ₦50M, Apartment as Benue Celebrates Football Queen
Governor Alia Rewards Ordega with ₦50M, House, and Street Renaming for WAFCON Heroics
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, on Thursday night, honoured international football star Francesca Ordega with a ₦50 million cash gift and a three-bedroom apartment in Makurdi in celebration of her role in Nigeria’s victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Hosting the Gboko-born footballer at a dinner in Makurdi, the governor described Ordega as “the greatest sports ambassador Benue has produced in recent times.” He also announced plans to rename a major street in her honour.
Ordega, a key member of the Super Falcons, helped secure Nigeria’s record-extending fifth WAFCON title and has now lifted the continental trophy five times.
In a surprise addition, Governor Alia also gifted ₦10 million to the local coach who nurtured Ordega’s early football journey in Benue.
“She is an inspiration to every young girl dreaming of greatness through sports. Her story is proof that talent, when nurtured, can bring national pride,” Alia declared.
He urged parents to encourage their daughters to pursue sports, noting that Ordega’s success is a shining example of what’s possible with support, mentorship, and resilience.
Ordega’s Emotional Response
In her speech, a visibly moved Ordega thanked the governor and the people of Benue for the overwhelming support. She called on leaders to invest in grassroots sports development, especially for girls.
“Let’s support sports infrastructure, training programmes, and create scholarships for young athletes. If we provide the right tools, we can raise the next generation of champions,” she said.
Ordega also emphasized the need for peace and unity among Benue youths, urging them to support the Alia administration.
TuFace and NFF Join the Celebration
Popular musician and entertainer Innocent Idibia (TuFace), who serves as Technical Adviser to the Governor on Entertainment and Community Outreach, praised Alia for championing youth development through sports and entertainment.
He announced the upcoming Benue Wild Talent Hunt, a reality talent show with a ₦50 million star prize, and plans for an inter-state carnival to further spotlight local talent.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also presented a special award to Governor Alia in recognition of his support for football in the country.
