From Nigeria to the Top: Doctor Breaks Record with 8 U.S. Residency Awards

Dr. Timileyin Oluseyi, a Nigerian doctor based in the United States, has made history and captured hearts across Nigeria and the global Black community by achieving a remarkable milestone during his medical residency graduation.

In an unprecedented achievement, Dr. Oluseyi won all eight of his program’s top awards—a clean sweep never before recorded in the institution’s history. His accolades reflect excellence across a wide range of categories, including clinical performance, leadership, research, and patient care.

Dr. Oluseyi is not only the first Black resident to attain this feat but also reportedly outshone his peers across all key performance indicators.

His remarkable accomplishments earned widespread admiration from faculty and fellow residents alike. A now-viral video from the ceremony shows the program’s director and department chairman honoring him with a traditional Yoruba gesture—prostrating fully on the floor, a profound sign of respect in Yoruba culture.

The cultural tribute was said to be the result of intentional research by the institution’s leadership, reflecting the depth of their admiration. “The chairman said, ‘We’ve never seen anything like this. He raised the bar for this program forever,’” a faculty member shared.

Adding a touch of humor to the occasion, colleagues presented Dr. Oluseyi with a wheelbarrow to symbolically help him carry home the many awards—a playful moment that drew laughter and applause from those in attendance.
