Emem Madu, a Nigerian-born Canadian, has been appointed as a Judge of the Alberta Court of Justice in Canada, marking a significant achievement in her career. Madu, an alumna of the University of Lagos, Nigeria, will serve in the Edmonton Family and Youth Division, with her appointment taking effect on January 31, 2025.
The announcement was made public by Nigerian professor Gideon Christian, who shared the news on Thursday, celebrating Madu’s success. “A great @UnilagNigeria alumna just got appointed as a Judge of the Alberta Court of Justice. Congrats, Madam Justice Emem Madu. #Naija no dey carry las,” he wrote.
Madu’s educational background is as impressive as her new appointment. She earned her bachelor of laws from the University of Lagos in 2002, followed by a barrister at law qualification from the Nigerian Law School in 2003. She then pursued a Master of Laws degree at the University of Alberta, which she completed in 2007.
Throughout her career, Madu has built an impressive professional portfolio. She has worked as a regulatory compliance specialist at ATB Financial, a policy and legislation analyst at Alberta Justice, and a research lawyer at Brownlee LLP in Edmonton.
Madu’s appointment to the Alberta Court of Justice underscores not only her personal achievements but also the continued success of Nigerian professionals on the global stage.
