Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has confidently predicted that more prominent members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) will soon defect to the ruling party. Speaking during an empowerment program in Kano on Sunday, Ganduje expressed satisfaction with the growing appeal of APC’s policies and governance style, which he believes are drawing opposition members to his party.
“We appreciate your resistance to campaigns from various political parties, especially from that fading party known as NNPP,” Ganduje said, thanking APC supporters for their steadfastness. “You’ve created a welcoming environment and behaved in a way that invites others. Very soon, we will be receiving senior figures, former legislators, senators, and other key individuals from that dying party, NNPP. They are quietly joining us, and they will soon be part of our great APC.”
Ganduje’s comments come amidst mounting speculation that several high-ranking NNPP members, dissatisfied with the leadership and direction of their party, are preparing to make the switch to the APC.
The speculation intensified following the presence of Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin at the private event of Senator Kawu Sumaila, a prominent NNPP member. Sumaila, who represents Kano South, defected from the APC before the 2023 elections due to a leadership crisis within the party, adding fuel to rumors of further defections.
As the APC continues to position itself as the party of choice for disgruntled politicians, it remains to be seen how the leadership of NNPP will respond to this influx of new members into the APC fold.
