Gbenga Daniel, Ladi Adebutu Mourn the Loss of Ijaya, Ogun Lawmaker
Former Ogun State governor and current Senator for Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, along with Ladi Adebutu, the 2023 gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, have expressed their deep condolences following the passing of Adewunmi Onanuga, popularly known as Ijaya. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency in the House of Representatives, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 59, after a prolonged illness in a UK hospital.
Daniel, deeply shocked by the news, described Onanuga as a close confidant, a trusted younger sister, and a highly resourceful politician. In his heartfelt condolence message on Thursday, Daniel praised Onanuga’s political acumen, calling her not only a remarkable politician but also an inspiration to women who aspired to engage in politics.
“She was a close confidant and associate who reposed so much confidence in me, and her painful passage could not have come at a more painful moment for me because I seem to have lost a younger sister,” Daniel said. “Though her passing is too soon, too sudden, and unexpected, I believe she has gone to take her much-needed rest with her Maker.”
Daniel also noted the loss felt in Remoland, where Onanuga was a beacon of hope for women’s aspirations. Her ‘can-do’ spirit, her vitality, and the respect she garnered wherever she went left a lasting impact. “She was not just a politician, but one with a remarkable difference, making her impact felt wherever she found herself,” Daniel added.
Similarly, Adebutu expressed his own condolences, acknowledging that, despite their differing political affiliations, Onanuga’s leadership style and passion for community development had a lasting impact on Ogun State and Nigeria. “Hon Onanuga was a trailblazer and an inspiration to many, especially women aspiring to leadership roles,” Adebutu said. “Her unwavering commitment to the well-being of her constituents and her ability to create meaningful change will be remembered for years to come.”
Adebutu extended his sympathy to Onanuga’s immediate family and the people of the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency, offering prayers for strength and comfort during this time of mourning.
