Governor Bago Cancels Sallah Festivities in Mourning After Devastating Flood in Niger State
In response to the recent flood disaster that claimed lives and destroyed property in Mokwa and surrounding communities, Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has ordered a low-key observance of the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration across all Emirates in the state.
The governor also directed the suspension of traditional Sallah events, including Hawan Bariki, Durbar processions, and other large public festivities.
The directive was conveyed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, who stated that the decision was made out of respect for the victims of the flood and to allow for a period of mourning, prayers, and reflection.
“This is one of the most devastating floods in the history of the state,” the SSG said.
“It has left families bereaved, destroyed homes, and swept away livelihoods in Mokwa and neighbouring communities.”
Alhaji Usman emphasized that the governor’s decision reflects the somber mood of the state and the need for solidarity with affected families during this difficult time.
He urged all traditional rulers and community leaders to comply fully with the directive and to encourage prayers and acts of compassion in place of elaborate celebrations.
