Governor Nwifuru Mourns Victims of Izzi-Effium Crisis, Calls for Peace
Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has expressed deep sorrow over the brutal killings of innocent Izzi indigenes during the ongoing Effium-Ezza Effium communal conflict, which has claimed hundreds of lives and led to the destruction of properties worth billions.
Governor Nwifuru lamented that the victims were innocent bystanders in a conflict they had no part in. He praised the people of Izzi for their remarkable restraint and peaceful demeanor in the face of the attacks, emphasizing that their calmness should not be misunderstood as cowardice but recognized as a sign of wisdom and maturity.
The Governor made the remarks during the New Year homage by the Oha Izzi at his country home in Offerekpe Agbaja, Izzi Local Government Area. He particularly commended the Izzi clan for their composure following the brutal killing of 13 of their people by the Effium community amid the ongoing conflict in the Effium area of Ohaukwu Local Government.
“I must commend the people of Izzi for their remarkable restraint and maturity,” Governor Nwifuru said. “Despite the unprovoked killings, the people have remained peaceful, showing wisdom in the face of adversity.”
The Governor also urged the Effium community to join the state government’s peace initiatives and work towards achieving lasting peace in the war-torn Effium community.
Governor Nwifuru further called on Izzi indigenes involved in state government projects to ensure quick and efficient delivery of work, emphasizing the importance of commitment to development for the progress of the state.
He also tasked all political appointees in the state to enhance their performance and fulfill their responsibilities with dedication in their respective areas.
In their speeches, Senator Chris Nwankwo, Architect Mbam Ogodo, and HRH Eze Sunday Oketa expressed gratitude to Governor Nwifuru for his developmental efforts and peace initiatives. They acknowledged his contributions in giving the Izzi clan a stronger voice in Nigerian politics and pledged their unwavering support for his leadership.
The stakeholders also expressed thanks to God for the progress made under Governor Nwifuru’s administration and reiterated their support for peace and development in Ebonyi State.
