Herdsmen Attack Kill Five Labourers in Ondo State, Police Investigate
Five labourers from Plateau and Kaduna states were killed on Tuesday afternoon when herdsmen launched a deadly attack on farmlands in Ondo State. The victims were working on the farmlands when the herdsmen, who had previously been destroying crops and disrupting local farming activities, attacked the workers around 3:00 pm.
An eyewitness, who is also a farmer in the area, explained that the herdsmen arrived suddenly, opening fire and killing five people. The eyewitness described the incident as part of an ongoing pattern of attacks that have caused many farmers to abandon their land out of fear for their lives.
“The attacks are happening every day. Many farmers have fled because they are afraid of being killed,” the source lamented. “Our women are even being raped during some of these attacks.”
The Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the attack, though she was unable to provide an exact number of casualties, stating that investigations were still ongoing.
The tragic incident underscores the growing concerns over the safety of farmers in rural communities, with many facing daily threats to their lives and livelihoods.
