A woman and her children narrowly escaped death, while four houses were reduced to ashes, following a tragic motor vehicle accident in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State. The horrifying incident occurred on Sunday morning, sending shockwaves through residents living along the roadside.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, veered uncontrollably off the road, crashing into a residential house. The vehicle collided with the building’s wall before driving directly into the living room where the woman and her children had been sleeping. Despite the devastating crash, the family miraculously survived.
Confirming the incident, Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Shi’isu Adam, described the crash as occurring around 12:30 AM at Elpies Street, Mobile Quarters, Dutse. DSP Adam stated, “A woman and her children escaped death, but four houses were burnt to the ground during the incident.”
According to the PPRO, the vehicle involved was driven by two men, Muhammad Galadima (32) and Abdullahi Abubakar Sadiq (41), both from the same address. It is suspected that both individuals were under the influence of alcohol when they crashed the car. The crash caused the vehicle to ignite, setting the house on fire, which then spread to three neighboring homes, completely destroying them.
Thankfully, DSP Adam confirmed that no lives were lost, thanks to the swift actions of the police and local firefighters. “The fire was promptly extinguished with the help of the police, firefighters, and local volunteers,” Adam said.
Initial investigations revealed that Muhammad Galadima, the vehicle’s owner, had handed the keys to Abdullahi Sadiq, despite knowing Sadiq was not a licensed driver. Both suspects have been taken into custody for a thorough investigation.
“We will ensure a diligent investigation, and once complete, those responsible for this destruction will face prosecution,” DSP Adam assured. He also emphasized the importance of caution and responsibility while driving, especially during the festive season.
The police further urged residents to report any instances of reckless driving and suspicious behavior to the nearest police station. The authorities commended the quick response of the firefighters and local volunteers, noting their selfless efforts in preventing further destruction.
The incident has raised concerns among residents of Dutse, particularly those living near the road, about the dangers of reckless driving and the safety risks it poses to homes situated along busy streets.
