IGP Kayode Egbetokun Issues Stern Warning on Police Assaults
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has made it clear that any form of assault or attack on police officers will no longer be tolerated. During a visit to the Enugu State Command on Friday, the IGP delivered a strong message, stressing that such actions are not only criminal but represent a direct assault on the police institution itself.
Egbetokun underlined that attacks on police officers would be met with decisive and appropriate consequences. “An assault on a policeman is criminal; it is an assault on the Inspector General, and we are not going to condone any act of assault on our officers, let alone the killing of any of our officers,” he declared, emphasizing the force’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its personnel.
The IGP further announced that starting in 2025, the police will take an even stronger stance against assaults or killings of its members. He called for a united, collective approach to addressing these issues, stating, “Anywhere there is the killing of any policeman, we must all respond collectively and appropriately.” Egbetokun’s remarks highlighted the importance of a coordinated and resolute response to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Additionally, the IGP reassured police officers that the force is working closely with the Federal Government to improve the welfare of its personnel, ensuring that they are better supported in carrying out their duties.
