The lawmaker, who represents the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), had previously come under fire after a video surfaced showing him repeatedly slapping and insulting Abuwatseya. In the video, Ikwechegh can be heard calling the driver a rat and threatening to make him “disappear.” The altercation occurred when Abuwatseya attempted to deliver a package to the lawmaker, but Ikwechegh accused him of disrespecting him by asking him to step out of his house.
In the aftermath of the scandal, Ikwechegh apologized for his actions, emphasizing that he and Abuwatseya had resolved the issue through alternative dispute resolution methods.

Three months after the incident, Ikwechegh looked back on the matter and described it as an unfortunate “low moment” for him. However, he explained that it also allowed him to build a relationship with Abuwatseya, who he now considers a friend. He noted that while the matter was initially taken to court, the case was dismissed for lack of merit.
Ikwechegh said, “What happened was quite unfortunate, but I take it that it’s an avenue for me as a person to also build a relationship with the young man that came. Today we are friends.”

The lawmaker subtly justified his actions by explaining that many Nigerians did not know what led to the incident. He said he felt the sanctity of his home had been violated when Abuwatseya insisted on delivering the package in a way he deemed disrespectful. Ikwechegh further stated that the video people saw was only part of the story and that actions often preempt reactions.
Despite the controversy, Ikwechegh reiterated that he and Abuwatseya have moved past the incident and are now on good terms.
