Incessant change of legislators not good for democracy – Ex-lawmaker, Falade
A former member of the 6th National Assembly, who represented Ede, Ejigbo, and Egbedore Federal Constituency of Osun State in the House of Representatives, Bade Falade has condemned incessant change of lawmakers.
He expressed this view while fielding questions from journalists in Osogbo at The Frontliners, a programme organised by the League of Veteran Journalists, Osun State.
Falade contended that retaining lawmakers was necessary for members of the National Assembly to bring about good legislative turnover that will positively impact the lives of the people.
He also contended that legislative function is an act that needs to be learnt for years in order to contribute meaningfully to issues in the hallowed chamber.
The lawmaker also frowned at some state governors who regarded the National Assembly as a dumping ground to retire politically after their tenure.
He said, “many of them end up becoming a liability because of their newness in lawmaking.”
Bade Falade called on Nigerians to focus less on the monthly emoluments and luxury cars of the lawmakers, adding that they should appreciate the enormity of their oversight functions, particularly the blocking of financial leakages.
On the feud between former governors Rauf Aregbesola’s group and that of Adegboyega Oyetola, he stated that all major stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State were on top of the situation.
“We are on top of the situation in such a way that the ruling party will be jolted before the 2026 governorship election in Osun,” he said.
The former lawmaker condemned in its entirety the method of election at the local government.
He noted that a situation where the ruling party clears all available positions will not augur well for the third tier of government.
He advocated for the independence of the state electoral commissions.
Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the occasion, Barrister Sunday Ojo Williams stated that one of the reasons Nigerian politicians take pleasure in jumping from one party to the other is because there are no political ideologies.
