STILL ON THE WELFARE OF JUDGES AND THE REFORMS IN THE JUSTICE SECTOR
A Jurist whose identity I will not disclose private-chatted in respect of my comments on the welfare of the judiciary. Am more enlightened by the Judge’s informed and practical analysis of the subject matter.
The erudite Judge is of the opinion that issues of welfare of judges vary from state and also from court to court. For instance, challenges confronting the Judges of the Industrial court are quite different from those present at the Federal High Court and or the Federal Capital Territory High Court or that of each state of the federation high courts and on and on like. Likewise , the challenges being faced at the Courts of Appeal are not the same with those that exists at the apex courts and vice -versa.
What struck me most in the comment of the erudite Judge is this and I was moved to tears. The jurist wrote-
“Will it be a surprise to you if I tell you that Osun State government still owed judges arrears of allowances accumulated during Aregbe’s tenure till date. The minimum owed a Judge that served that time is not less than #15M. That is something we are entitled to.
Can any governor afford to do that for the House of Assembly?
Are you aware that Judges are still earning the 2008 salaries?
What is the inflationary rate since 2008 to the present 2023?
Can any sane government or politicians defend this state of affairs?
It is wrong of you to compare a Judge with a politician say for example a member of House of representatives or senator that goes home with minimum of #15m to #25m monthly.
The salary and allowances of a Judge is not up to #1.3m in my state. I don’t know of others. So if we clamour for better remuneration for Judges, how does that amount to greediness or competing with insane politicians?
My brother, if you want to help the judiciary in this country, the best you people can do is to separate Judges salaries from that of consolidated salaries of politicians. This will enable the appropriate body take steps to timely to refuse salaries of judges without the excess luggages of you the politicians.”
The Governor of Osun State, the amiable Senator Ademola Jackson Adeleke should please as a matter of urgency redress the injustice to the dignity of the judges in Osun State without further delay. It never occurred to me that Judges( My Lords) could also be treated in this insulting and ridiculous manners.
The State Government should look for means of clearing all those backlogs of salaries and allowances at once , even if it means that supplementary budget would be resorted to remedy those grievous inhumane treatment.
The conversation on the comprehensive reform in the Justice Sector continues.
