Justice Omukoro: Nigerian Law Society, NLS, Demands Immediate Release of Abducted Bayelsa High Court Judge
The Nigerian Law Society has strongly condemned the abduction of Hon. Justice Ebiyerin Goodness Omukoro of the Bayelsa State Judiciary, describing the incident as a grave assault on the Nigerian judiciary and a blatant violation of the Constitution.
In a statement titled “Assault on the Judiciary – A Call to Immediately Release Hon. Justice E. B. Omukoro”, the Society expressed deep concern and sadness over what it termed a direct threat to democracy, the rule of law, and the effective administration of justice in the country.
“This unfortunate incident is a gross violation of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended). It is not only a threat to democracy and democratic principles but also a threat to the rule of law and justice in our country,” the statement read.
The Society emphasized that the safety of judicial officers is critical to maintaining public confidence in the nation’s legal institutions. “We unequivocally demand his immediate release, and call on the relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action to secure his release and bring the perpetrators to justice. The safety and security of our judges is paramount to the effective administration of justice and the maintenance of public trust in our institutions.”
The Society reiterated its solidarity with the victim’s family and the judiciary, urging intensified efforts to protect judicial officers and ensure that those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice. “We stand in solidarity with Justice Omukoro’s family, colleagues, and the entire judiciary, and pray for his safe and speedy release.”
