Justice Within: Civil Defence Board Axes Officers in Major Anti-Misconduct Drive
In a bold move to restore integrity and enforce accountability within the ranks, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has sanctioned dozens of officers from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) following a thorough review of 231 disciplinary cases.
The board’s sweeping decisions include:
-
15 officers dismissed for gross misconduct and serious breaches of service regulations
-
59 officers demoted for violating professional standards
-
42 issued warning letters as formal reprimands
Additionally, eight officers were forced into compulsory retirement, while seven others were suspended pending further investigation.
The board also cleared 16 officers of any wrongdoing, reflecting its commitment to due process and impartiality.
In one of the most serious cases reviewed, an officer was suspended and referred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for potential criminal prosecution. Another was directed to refund all salary and benefits received while illegally holding a higher rank, after having their promotion reversed.
These decisions were disclosed by Umar Abubakar, Public Relations Officer of the NCoS, in a statement on Thursday. The sanctions followed recommendations from the Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee, which had conducted extensive internal investigations.
The board’s actions were endorsed under the leadership of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunde-Ojo, who emphasized the government’s resolve to uphold discipline, professionalism, and ethical conduct across all uniformed services.
Reinforcing this message, Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, assured the public that all disciplinary matters will continue to be handled fairly and transparently, strictly in line with service rules and regulations.
This latest development signals a growing emphasis on accountability in Nigeria’s security and correctional institutions, setting a new tone for internal governance and conduct standards.
