Kano State Government Rejects Proposed Federal Tax Reform Bill
The Kano State government has strongly opposed the proposed federal tax reform bills, labeling them as “ill-timed, lopsided, and inimical to the unity of the country.”
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed this position during the 2025 New Year celebration held at the Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre in Kano. In a statement read on his behalf by his deputy, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, the governor criticized the proposed tax hike, describing it as a misguided response to Nigeria’s current economic difficulties.
“Nigerians, particularly in the North, are grappling with hyperinflation and unprecedented insecurity,” the statement noted, urging the federal government to focus on alleviating extreme poverty and hunger in the northern region, rather than imposing further financial burdens on citizens.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the proposed tax reforms would exacerbate the economic strain on Nigerians, adding, “Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people.”
During the event, Governor Yusuf also reflected on his administration’s achievements in key areas such as healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programs, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Kano residents.
He also highlighted significant milestones, including the January 2024 Supreme Court ruling that confirmed his electoral victory and the reinstatement of Emir Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024, which he described as a victory for the people of Kano. “The authority to appoint an Emir lies solely with the Governor of Kano State,” he remarked, urging those critical of the appointment to respect the law and maintain peace.
Looking forward to the year ahead, the deputy governor called on Kano residents to remain united and optimistic, stating, “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”
Additionally, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Honourable Yusuf Jibril Falgore, extended New Year greetings and called for continued support from the people for the government’s developmental initiatives.
