Kano State Launches Groundbreaking Waste Management Initiative

kanoThe Kano State government has introduced a bold new initiative aimed at addressing the growing problem of waste disposal in public spaces. The initiative is set to enhance waste management and encourage responsible disposal behaviors throughout the state.

At the heart of this program is the reintroduction of waste disposal bins in public transport vehicles, such as tricycles (Adaidaita Sahu) and buses. In addition, bins will be strategically placed at major locations including busy roads, motor parks, and marketplaces.

Dr. Dahiru Hashimu, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, highlighted that the aim of the initiative is to promote proper waste disposal while ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for the residents of Kano. “With these waste bins, commuters can dispose of their trash responsibly during their journeys, and we will no longer tolerate littering on the streets,” Dr. Hashimu stated during the launch of the Kano State Waste Management and Refuse Disposal Initiative.

Collaboration between the Ministries of Transportation and Commerce is central to this program, ensuring a multi-faceted approach to solving waste management challenges. In addition to waste bins, Dr. Hashimu announced the revival of street sweeping services, with street sweepers being deployed to high-traffic areas. These workers, whose backlog of salaries had been cleared, are now actively contributing to keeping the streets cleaner.

“This is part of a broader waste management strategy to reduce waste accumulation, create job opportunities, and ensure that Kano remains one of the cleanest states in Nigeria,” Dr. Hashimu explained.

He also urged residents to take part in the effort by using the provided waste bins and committing to responsible waste disposal practices.
