“Labour Party Reacts to Kenneth Okonkwo’s Exit: ‘Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish'”
keThe Labour Party (LP) has announced its decision to field former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its candidate in the 2027 general elections, reaffirming its commitment to challenging the current administration.
Abayomi Arabambi, the National Publicity Secretary of the LP, made the declaration during an appearance on ‘Politics Today’ on Channels Television. Arabambi emphasized that President Bola Tinubu will not have an easy run in the upcoming polls, as the LP plans to make a strong comeback, led by Obi.
“Tinubu is not going to have it very easy in 2027. We are coming back with Peter Obi, and they will know we are very serious,” Arabambi said, signaling the party’s determination for the next election cycle.
Arabambi also weighed in on the recent exit of actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo from the party, dismissing it as a positive move for the LP. He accused Okonkwo of lacking loyalty and claimed the actor-politician was secretly aligned with President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We wish Kenneth Okonkwo well, but his resignation is a relief for us. It’s good riddance to bad rubbish. He should no longer speak about the Labour Party,” Arabambi asserted.
The LP spokesperson also rejected claims of a leadership crisis within the party, dismissing such reports as fabrications by detractors. “There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. We are not going anywhere. The idea of our extinction is just a figment of the imagination of our opponents,” he said.
It’s important to note that Peter Obi was the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections but lost to Tinubu, the APC’s candidate. Obi secured third place in the election, trailing behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the LP is preparing for a renewed battle with a focus on Obi’s return to the political stage.
