Labour Party Vows To Challenge September 28 Anambra LG Elections In Court

THE Labour Party, LP, has vowed to challenge the scheduled September 28 local government election in Anambra State.

At the stakeholders meeting in Awka, the state branch of the party said the law passed by the state House of Assembly concerning the election was filled with anti democratic provisions.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, the state publicity secretary of the party, Mr. Theo Egbe said LP has decided to challenge the action of the state lawmakers in court.

His statement read: “After careful study of the amended Electoral Law by the State House of Assembly, we of LP have resolved to approach the court to challenge some of the obnoxious clauses in the hastily amended laws.

“However, we as a party are getting prepared to participate in the election once the right and lawful things are done, and without prejudice to the outcome of the judicial proceedings pending before the court.

“We enjoin our teeming members at the grassroots to prepare and be ready for further instructions while we work assiduously to affirm our party’s final position within the coming days.

“We shall remain on constant alert, observation and analyses of unfolding events, and shall in due course state our party’s position/stand with regards to the council election”.

The controversial law passed first, second and third reading during one sitting and it is not waiting for the governor’s accent.
